Abstract

The halogen bond between I2 or an organoiodide and a nitrogen heterocycle can be used to control crystal packing. The interaction is relatively strong, highly directional and well-described by quantum mechanical calculations. This allows it to be reliably used for crystal engineering projects. Examples include the resolution of chiral perfluorohaloalkanes, the control o f polymorph formation and the control of diacetylene solid state polymerization. An unique feature in these applications is the ability to remove one component of the co-crystal by thermolysis or solvolysis.
