Abstract

The purpose of this project is to treat the backs of those who take part in cheerleading. This project will positively impact the cheerleaders by giving their backs support during practices by wearing the brace. The motive for creating this brace derives from experience in this sport, many cheerleaders suffer from lower back pain. If a cheerleader practices more hours than most then they will have more strain on their backs, making them more susceptible to lower back pain. The brace that is being created will not be bulky and high maintenance like other braces, which makes it unique because the cheerleaders would be able to wear it during and out of practice. The brace will have different qualities, such as a removable heating pad, that will allow it to provide therapy to the back. The first step of this project is to create and distribute an anonymous and classified survey that rates the intensity of the back pain as well as how much they practice. The independent variable is the survey questions and the dependent variable is based on the responses to the survey questions. The next step is to research the most affected area of the back. Materials include: spandex like fabric, velcro, sweat absorbent fabric and plastic rods. There are currently 24 responses to the survey that was sent out. Responses show lower back pain is more prominent. The survey revealed that the ones who practiced more had lower back pain rather than those who practiced less.
