Abstract

This project was performed to test the efficacy of a design of a pain relief compression shirt with an equipped pouch for a gel pack. Its purpose is to help aid the approximately 80% of the world's population that suffers or will suffer from back pain at some point in their life. This problem is an important one to attempt to solve since it is such a common ailment that plagues the modern world. Overall, this design was created due to the overall comfort and other healing effects of compression clothing. Compression can help increase blood flow to the areas it covers, and that coupled with the effects of either heat or cold therapy can ensure an overall effective pain relieving sensation for lower back pain. The main criteria tested and stressed for the shirt are: comfort, efficacy, cost, and long term effects on the body. To test these criteria, 10 subjects were asked to sit without the shirt for five minutes to show the effects of sitting in one position, and then asked to sit for five minutes with the aid of the shirt. This process was repeated with walking for five minutes as well. The shirt proved effective, with the common trend of pain level on a zero to ten scale decreasing when the shirt was worn. These results show that the engineering goals were reached.
