Improved Reach Extender with Wrist Support

Ranger Klauk, Center For Advanced Technical Studies

Abstract

The motorized reach extender is important because it supplies a greater experience for those with dexterity and strength issues. The inventor’s grandfather was extremely arthritic, thus bringing motivation for the project. This is significant due to the simple fact that such an overwhelming number of the population has dexterity and strength issues. More than 22% of American adults (over 52.5 million people) have arthritis or another rheumatic condition diagnosed by a doctor. Methods for creating the prototype will be firstly, forming and shaping parts and components, then creating the internal trigger mechanism, then assembling all parts together including interlocking the metal twine with the servo motor. Independent variable is the design of the reach extender, dependent variables are the weight able to be lifted and the comfort rating given by participants. Some control variables include the weights being lifted, ambient temperaturetemperate, ambient humidity, same time of day the study is being conducted, etc. It is expected that the reach extender will prove successful in being able to perform better than the modern design. The results could change however if the metal twine used is not strong enough to support the motor or that it turns out to be very cumbersome and uncomfortable. In conclusion, the motorized reach extender with wrist support will be more effective than its modern counterpart and it is significant due to a large amount of people having dexterity issues.
