Abstract

The first electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements for the divalent aluminum radical HA1OH with sufficient resolution to confirm its non-linear geometry are presented. Isotopic substitutions permitted the study of Ha1OH, DA1OD and HA117OH in neon and argon matrices at 4 K. The radicals were generated by the reaction of laser vaporized aluminum with H2O(g). New electronic structure information was obtained from the nuclear hyperfine interactions (A tensors) of H, D and 17(I = 52). Configuration interaction (CI) calculations of the isotropic and dipolar components of the A tensors were conducted for comparison with these experimental results for both the cis and trans conformers of Ha1OH.
