Abstract

Nanoscience is an emerging area of scientific research that cuts across numerous disciplines with the primary emphasis being the size of the objects under discussion. This paper describes work from our laboratories over the past two decades on the design and fabrication of nanoscale structures that are able to to sense and respond to physical or chemical inputs. These structures are primarily assembled from carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen, and are therefore "soft" organic materials as opposed to metal-based materials.
