This paper focuses on the history and experiences of Japan's ethnic minority groups (the Burakumin, Zainichi Koreans, Ainu, Okinawans, and new migrants) as well as their relationship to the overall definition of and discourse surrounding the concept of "Japaneseness" and how the boundaries of who is and isn't Japanese have shifted over time.
