Description
As a final assignment for a course entitled, Public Spheres and Spaces, the three presentations of this panel represent the work of students who participated in the Fall 2017 Brussels study abroad program sponsored by the Political Science Department. Their assignment was to redesign Place Flagey, a public space near their apartments in Brussels, where they and many others shopped for groceries, caught transportation, and socialized, often over drinks and food. In the last few weeks of the course, students studied the main principles, functions, and design elements of effective public spaces throughout the world. The class was then divided into three groups of five students. Each group member was delegated a task such a researching the history of area, analyzing Place Flagey’s strengths and weaknesses, designing the space and implementing that design via a computer program often used by city planners. The three presenters of this panel are the original spokespersons for their group. The class voted on which design they thought was best. Perhaps the audience gathered for the panel would like to do the same?
