Description
Community gardening utilizes small plots of land for community members to produce local food in neighborhoods. While potentially inspiring, successful community gardens face numerous challenges. This study presents a synthesis of literature review and participant observations at a case study community garden in Greenville’s Nicholtown neighborhood. The case study describes a project launched by the Nicholtown Community Center in collaboration with Sustaining Way, a neighborhood non-profit. Positive outcomes include a space for collaboration, social connections, and a food source; however, challenges include limited resources, funding, and sustained volunteer enthusiasm.
