Description
An overview of my internship experience at Greenville Healthcare Systems' Center for Integrative Oncology and Survivorship (CIOS). During this internship, I experienced the varying aspects of cancer pre- and post- treatment. I worked closely with physicians, nurse practitioners, physical therapists and other healthcare professionals to learn the innovative techniques to treat cancer, specifically focusing on diet and exercise as a means to control symptoms. Additionally, I assisted in three research opportunities that focused on the affect of hormone therapy medication on body composition of breast cancer patients, the use of heart rate variability on cancer patients, the validity of SOZO equipment to assess body composition, and the impact of using audio books while walking on the health of older adults. During my time, I was able to attend learn valuable skills and experience diversity within and around Greenville. I was able to develop my scope of knowledge in the field I am interested in pursuing, Lifestyle Medicine, as the Center for Integrative Oncology and Survivorship focuses on treating the whole person through programs such as Moving On, Smoking Cessation, Lifetime Clinic, Nutrition, Sexual Health, physical therapy, and many more.
