Abstract

The purpose of this product is to reduce tension in the lower back and therefore decrease lower back pain. This product is designed to be used while working in the bed whether it be using a laptop, reading a book, or watching television. According to the CDC, about 6% of people aged between 18-29 experience frequent, severe lower back pain. Another study conducted on British employees showed that about 1 in 5 employees work in their beds. A common cause of lower back pain is incorrect seated posture. The first step to creating a prototype was to sketch and calculate the correct dimensions according to the current material sizes and the required inclination of 115 degrees - the best angle of inclination to reduce lower back pain while in a comfortable working position. The next step was to cut the required sizes out of the foam and attach them together in order to obtain the required size and shape. Following that, the next step is to obtain feedback and creat new prototypes based on the feedback from a survey. According to the survey based on initial testing, the results were very positive. Other feedback included points of improvement such as getting a softer nect pillow and a softer piece to go in the popliteal region. The results show that the product is doing its job initially of reducing tension on the lower back while working in bed.
