Abstract
This research benefits patients diagnosed with glaucoma. It is important for bringing awareness to the barriers of eye care glaucoma patients face. Having a family member diagnosed with glaucoma allowed for understanding of certain difficulties of glaucoma patients. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. Many glaucoma patients suffer from barriers that prevent the receiving of available medical treatment. The hypothesis is that if glaucoma patients are affected by various eye care barriers, then they will be more likely to suffer adverse effects of glaucoma. This study explores the more detailed and specific difficulties glaucoma patients often face. This study will increase awareness for patients who may experience barriers Materials include online and paper surveys, allowing for them to be distributed in clinics as well as online. Variables are as follows: independent variables are whether or not the patient suffers from eye care barriers, dependent variables are whether or not the patient suffers from adverse effects of glaucoma, and the constant variable is that they are all glaucoma patients. Given the responses collected at this stage in the study there is evidence of barriers that possibly contribute to vision loss. However some responses show that vision loss without any of the listed barriers, partially supporting the study hypothesis. The study of glaucoma patients and their barriers to receiving proper care will represent whether or not such barriers have an impact on the recovery of patients and bring awareness to those suffering and at risk.
