[Pointing Finger]There never was greater mistake than that some of the Democratic leaders are making, in trying to screen Brooks, and to discountenance "indignation meetings." In so doing they take upon themselves the unnecessary odium of being the opponents of Freedom of Debate. No Party can stand long on that untenable ground. Had they been wise they would have suffered the storm to expend itself on the perpetrator of the crime, and indeed have given it that direction. But that wisdom they have not. They prefer to share in the responsibility of his guilt. By treating the matter precisely as they would have treated a similar assault on a Democratic Senator, they could have lost nothing. But by their present folly they are doing themselves infinite damage.
