Abstract

The point of this project is to test biochar vs charcoal when it comes to water filtration. This is important because Biochar, which is much better for the environment, can be just as good as charcoal when it comes to water filtration. Since biochar is made up of organic matter it is very easy to produce. Everyone in the world needs access to clean drinking water, so this project can benefit everyone. While there are studies talking about the various kinds of water filters, there are not any tests talking about biochar vs charcoal in the field of water filtration. The layout for this project is the following. Different types of filters will be tested, and hopefully charcoal filters perform better or basically the same as other filters. After that, biochar and charcoal will be tested. Then a biochar filter will be made that can hopefully work just as well as the charcoal filter. For the results, it is expected that the charcoal filter will probably perform similar to or slightly worse than other filters, and it is also expected that biochar will be able to outperform regular charcoal filters. This project will be analyzed by finding the percentage of change from before and after the water was filtered. The project will be deemed successful when biochar has been proven to be just as good or better than charcoal when it comes to water filtration.
