The telegraphic despatches inform us that Col. BROOKS, of South Carolina, gave Senator SUMNER, ofMassachusetts, a genteel caning, the other day, in Washington. We have no doubt that the Colonel did it handsomely, and we hope it will be of service to the Honorable Senator, in his future abolition frenzies. We suppose the provocation was the speech which SUMNER made, in which he was abusive of Judge BUTLER and Judge DOUGLAS, and denounced all slaveholders as criminals! Well done for Col. BROOKS.
