Description

John Bennett Shaw and Howard Haycraft conceived the idea of a Sherlockian library group at The Baker Street Irregulars Dinner in January 1967. The first meeting of The Sub-Librarians of the Baker Street Irregulars in the American Library Association took place at a luncheon six months later on June 28 during the Annual American Library Association conference. Local Scowrers and Molly Maguires attending included Robert Steele, Dean and Shirley Dickensheet, Phyllis and Tony White (aka Anthony Boucher), Helan Halbach of Santa Barbara and Ray de Groat.

In addition to Shaw and Haycraft, other guests included Molly Haycraft, Keith Jennison, and Luther Norris.

The large-type edition of Sherlock Holmes' Greatest Cases, with an introduction by Haycraft, had been recently published. The book was distributed to everyone present, and was autographed by Haycraft, who was active in the Round Table on Service to the Blind among many ALA committees, and Jennison, its publisher.
